American Beauty

It really annoys me when people tell me that baseball is boring.

I watch my sports on TV mostly with my two buddies, Ponch and Justin. We loaf around, have some brews, and watch football and basketball like delirious maniacs for two-thirds of the year. But when that last third makes its way to springtime, the games are watched alone by me.

Mostly I feel bad for people like Ponch and Justin, so ignorant and resistant of the beauty of baseball.

Baseball is so comforting to true fans because the true fans are more than likely watching the majority of the games in solitude. Over those 162 games, you quickly realize that it will be only you and your team for most of the way.

People like Ponch and Justin don't know what that kind of comfort means though, so I discount them as nothing but talking heads who are recycling the same uninformed diatribes they learned while growing up with other people who didn't know anything about baseball.

I can recommend only one thing for Ponch and Justin, and that is to stay with what they know. Because people like them will never understand our nation's pastime.

  3. i am going to make one thing extremely clear. I don't hate baseball ( and in case you really can't tell, i'm the subject of the entry above) i really don't. i like watching baseball as much as anyone else. i understand the quick reflexes and intelligence that the players display. I understand "the game within the game" I see the beauty in a pitcher going nine. I understand baseball, i get it and until recently i have seen my stand for what it really is....I like baseball, what i'm really not liking is "Baseball fan"

every Game has em, the fan that won't admit that his game needs a little help, with baseball topping that list. Baseball, to me, is an aging beast. it's not america's pastime anymore, america has just passed it by. My main concerns about baseball can be broken down to a couple of issues. (that as with any problem, leads to many other areas) No Salary cap, seriously...do we have to bow down to the big market teams all the time? forget making the playing field the same for everyone, lets just watch the yankees over spend again, that should be fun. and yes, i understand that the rays came out of nowhere last year and that the royals are looking pretty decent in first right now. What about the pirates or reds? what about the fact that the marlins have a yard sale every four years or so?...The sport needs a cap! If anything else it'll keep good homegrown players from, you know, leaving home.

Another issue i have, which is probably the only one i need, is the comish..mr. Selig. how a "former" owner became the commisioner is a "shock". Ofcourse he doensn't care about the legacy of the sport, ofcourse he doesn't care about the whole roids era, the cash was coming in so there's no issue here.
so, again, i don't hate baseball...i don't like how it treats itself and try talking to any "fan" and they'll quickly turn into a fifteen year old girl who just learned her parents don't like the boy she's seeing. so, go ahead and claim that " I don't understand him" and that "I don't know anything about him" it just goes to show that everything baseball is, is because it's "fans" don't want to recognize it. keep thinking about how I don't "know" your sport and i'll keep seeing baseball for what it is....a great game brought to its knees by people who don't realize that it's not broadcasted through radio waves anymore.

  4. Dedicated to the above commenter:

"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

  5. The point, same as it's always been, is that no one, well me, hates your beloved game. i don't like what it's been turned into. so, when you realize that Gibson is not walking through that door and that your game has issues then maybe we could talk about them. keep thinking its an attack on the game and not the management... i'm sure it'll turn out for the better.
